Engaging Our Community

Bush Construction takes pride in helping others in the Quad Cities area. From sponsoring the HAVlife™ Martini ShakeOff and building homes for Habitat for Humanity, to helping grow the next generation of workforce with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Bush Construction team is dedicated to making a difference.

Recently, Big Brothers Big Sisters came to the Bush Construction offices to offer their junior high and high school aged Littles an opportunity to learn about a future career path in the construction industry. Five Littles, and their Bigs, visited our office to learn more about how we operate each and every day.

“Giving the kids insight into our processes and work environment, we took them to one of our current projects—the Village Co-Op project,” said Amy Simler, Administrative Services Manager. “I was extremely proud of our team. We had employees from our estimating department, project managers and senior leadership present to interact with the kids and truly show them what a career could look like in this industry.”

Donned in hard hats and safety vests, Littles had the opportunity to not only see a project in process, but also go on a virtual tour of each of the departments at Bush. Employees showed them how we estimate bids, design projects, and received insight on the tools we work with to get the project done.

Part of the evening’s event was to not just show off the work Bush Construction does in the community, but to engage the students with information about a potential career in the industry. Bush team members talked with the Littles about apprenticeship programs in the field, the type of schooling and classes they’ll need to be successful and the types of skills they’ll need to build a career.

“Littles got to actually go to the project and walk through it,” explains Simler. “It was exciting to show the students something they’ve never seen before and interest them in a new field of study. When the event was complete, one Little even said that he wanted to work at Bush Construction after he completed school!”

“Bush Construction is here because we love this community and we want to give back to it. We hold a special place for our youth—we want to support them, and nurture them to help them become professionals. It’s our hope that we’ll give them a spark and some hope that they can do this as a career.”
