Bush Heads Back to School with $20 Million Renovation

Bush Construction’s involvement in Pleasant Valley Community School District’s renovations will continue into 2018. As the project at Pleasant Valley Junior High School nears completion, Bush is excited to continue working for Pleasant Valley CSD on a $20 million renovation and addition project at the high school.

At the junior high, Bush was awarded the project through competitive bidding.  With the high school project, Bush was involved from the beginning when selected by Pleasant Valley CSD as Construction Manager.

“I think our work at the junior high encouraged them to hire us as their Construction Manager for this important project,” said Tom Quinn, Chief Estimator at Bush.

Managing the construction of the upcoming high school project means that, contrary to competitive bid projects, Bush collaborates with the owner and architect during the conceptual design phase all the way through the completion of the project. From helping the school district with budgeting assistance, to making construction schedules, to creating site logistics plans, Quinn said working with the school district has been a great experience.

The project includes a new gymnasium, a new 3-story science education wing, an administration center renovation and a new 250-stall parking lot.  A main corridor through the building will be incorporated by splitting the existing gymnasium into a band room and a wrestling room.

“In my opinion the top-load gymnasium is the coolest feature of the project and the most challenging to create,” Quinn explained.

“The gym floor is about 16 feet below grade. So, when you’re on the main level of the school you’ll walk onto a running track that circles the perimeter of the new gymnasium. When you look over the guardrails, the gym floor is 16 feet below.”

The Pleasant Valley Community School District continues to grow. In fact, the district has 500 more students attending than it did four years ago. Quinn said that is part of what makes this project so gratifying.

“There’s a lot of pride in this project because it’s such a huge, complex, and important project,” he said. “It’s exciting to be able to provide this renovation and addition for Pleasant Valley Community School District because they so desperately need the space and facilities to continue their growth.”

Though the high school project posed complexities for the entire project team, Quinn said the Bush Team was ready for the challenge.

“We work very hard to make sure projects are within budget.  It was very satisfying to help another project of this magnitude and complexity achieved its budget,” he explained. “With great participation from the subcontracting community, we were able to find some creative and cost effective solutions to the project challenges.”

The Pleasant Valley school board has approved the project.  Construction onsite will begin in mid-February.
